While perhaps more well-known for the Las Vegas Strip, Nevada's small towns offer an antidote for a traveler who wants to relax. With its historic charm, the oldest settlement of Genoa, and the cow-boyish culture so much lived in Elko; all towns have attractions of their own. Take a look at the mining heritage of Virginia City or soak in the natural hot springs of Caliente. Check these out and many other small towns when planning the next chill-out destination.

Boulder City

Boulder City is a quaint charming small town and is more famous for its close-up proximity to the most iconic Hoover Dam. There is a Museum in Boulder City鈥擝oulder City/Hoover Dam detailing the history of the creation of the Dam and its influence in the nearby vicinity. Hemenway Park has spectacular views of Lake Mead as well as a potential sighting of bighorn sheep. The Nevada Southern Railway offers a more rural view of the desert with scenic train rides. Not to be forgotten is Bootleg Canyon, which features mountain biking and zip-lining, and the historic Boulder Dam Hotel.

Genoa

Genoa is the oldest settlement in Nevada and also one rich in history, as evident in the Courthouse Museum. The area of Nevada's first permanent non-native settlement is presented at the Mormon Station State Historic Park. The Genoa Bar is the oldest thirst parlor in Nevada, and its door is always opening to relax one鈥檚 day. Genoa also has the Candy Dance Arts & Crafts Faire each year and brings in crowds to see homemade wares and delicious food. For those who love golf, Genoa Lakes Golf Club is also nearby and promotes unhurried games within a lovely scenic environment.

Virginia City

Virginia City is a historic town that captures Nevada's liveliest history. The Virginia & Truckee Railroad runs scenic rides through the historic mining areas. The Fourth Ward School Museum retains an essence of what 19th-century education looked like. Rich in cowboy culture and heritage, Elko is home to the Western Folklife Center, where visitors can experience the traditions of the American West.
