Flags, Symbols & Currency of Niue

The National Flag of Niue was officially adopted on October 15, 1975. The flag has been designed by Patricia Rex, who was the wife of the former Premier 鈥 Robert Rex.

The National Flag of Niue features a golden yellow background with the flag of the United Kingdom (Union Jack) in the upper hoist-side quadrant. The Flag of the UK bears five yellow five-pointed stars - a large yellow star on a navy-blue disk in the center and a smaller yellow star on each arm of the bold red cross. The Union Jack symbolizes Niue鈥檚 protection by the United Kingdom. The golden yellow background represents the bright sunshine of Niue and the warmth and friendship between the citizens of Niue and New Zealand. The larger yellow star stands for Niue, while the smaller yellow stars recall the Southern Cross constellation on the New Zealand flag and symbolize the close links between Niue and New Zealand. The navy-blue disk that contains the large yellow star, symbolizes the deep blue seas that surround the self-governing island nation of Niue. The flag has a height-to-width proportion ratio of 1:2.
