Brief History Of Wisconsin Dells
The dells were formed by glacial meltwater, which cut a channel up to 45 meters deep through the sandstone. During this process, the glacial meltwater carved unusual rock formations along a 25 km stretch of the Wisconsin River. Early rivermen gave those shapes descriptive names like Black Hawk鈥檚 Head or Chimney Rock. Wisconsin Dells was a town called 鈥凄补濒濒别蝉,鈥 a name given by the French explorers, and it means rapids or narrows in a river in French. The Wisconsin River played a vital part in the lives of the locals, from helping them with their logging business and shaping their way of life and etiquette.
The rock formations in the area carry pictographs carved by the Native Americans who made a home for themselves in the Dells for over 2000 years. The town was renamed and was referred to as Kilbourn from 1856 until 1931. Even before it was officially renamed to Wisconsin Dells, the Native Americans have always called it Wisconsin, particularly the Ho-Chunk tribe who gave it that name. Its descendants still live on the 8.09 sq. km land area, preserving the traditions and culture, and language of the tribe. The first permanent settlers started arriving in 1838 when the economy was based on logging spurred by the bridge built across the Wisconsin River in 1850. In addition, a dam was constructed in 1953, and a railroad bridge was built that led to an increase in mills numbers and settlements in the second half of the 19th century.听
