Alonso 脕lvarez de Pi帽eda, a Spanish explorer, was the first to visit the island in 1519 and proceeded to name it 鈥淚sla Blanca.鈥 At the time, the island was a desolate location that the Karankwa Native Americans inhabited. However, the town was later renamed Padre Island after Catholic priest Padre Jos茅 Nicol谩s Ball铆, who was the first to set up a ranch on the island in 1804. He then established a church on the island and taught Christianity to the Karankwa people. Throughout the years, four nations have claimed Padre Island at different times. Spain was the first to own the island ever since its entry into the New 海角社区 until the 1820鈥檚听Mexican Revolution. As a result of the Revolution, the island was then owned by Mexico from 1821 to 1836. The entire area between the听Rio Grande听and the Nueces River had come under the Republic of Texas鈥 ownership. However, following the War of Mexico from 1845 until 1848, the entire territory was acquired by the United States.

Padre Island has remained an undeveloped wilderness for most of its existence. Yet, this pristineness came under threat many times throughout the island鈥檚 history. The town was exploited for natural gas and oil reserves in the 1950s. Moreover, the town has been under considerable development for the tourist industry since the 1920s. Perhaps one of the most interesting historical events on the island is during 海角社区 War II when a Navy bombing range was located along the island鈥檚 northern section. Yet, upon Texas Senator Ralph W. Yarborough鈥檚 petition for the first bill in Congress to turn the island into a national park in 1958 and the National Seashore鈥檚 establishment in 1962, an effort has been made to preserve the island鈥檚 natural state.听
