History Of Rancho Mirage
Native Americans settled in the Rancho Mirage region around 2000 years ago, and the local tribe Agua Caliente Indian, tribe of Cahuilla Indians, stayed in the Rancho Mirage.
The first modern settlements in Rancho Mirage date back to the 1920s and 1930s. Philanthropists Leonore and Walter Annenberg owned The Annenberg Estate, or what is known now as Sunnylands. They had been popular with the powerful and wealthy, including Frank Sinatra, Queen Elizabeth II, Bob Hope, and Mary Martin.聽
Several United States presidents have vacationed at the Annenberg Estate, including Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon, and Gerald Ford who bought a house in Rancho Mirage and lived there at the time of his death in 2006.聽
The city鈥檚 first resort was the Thunderbird Guest Ranch and was opened in 1946 for business clientele and entertainers. In 2008, the tribal board finished the expansion of Agua Caliente resort and remodeled the Agua Caliente Casino, which is run by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians of Palm Spring. Although the Agua Caliente Resort and Casino are just outside the border of Rancho Mirage in an unincorporated area, the city included the property as part of it for the tribe to have access to police and firefighting services.
