Several major fires occurred in the 1850s and early 1860s. The fires convinced the townspeople to start using more bricks in rebuilding their structures. Civic leaders called the town "Nevada", Spanish for "snow-covered" in 1850.
The years 1850-1851 marked the Nevada City as the state's most important mining town, Nevada County being the state's leading gold-mining county. The town was also home to the first newspaper published in the county, The Nevada Journal, in 1851. The town of Nevada was later on incorporated in 1856. In 1864, the word "city" was added to the name to distinguish it from the nearby state of Nevada that borrowed the name.听
