Florence is a coastal city located in Lane County, Oregon, United States of America. The city lies at the mouth of the Siuslaw River on the Pacific Ocean immediately north of Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area.聽Florence city has a total area of 15.20 square km, of which 13.7 square km is land, and 1.48 square km is water and has an elevation of 25m.聽

Brief History Of Florence

Originally, Florence was the winter home for the Siuslaw tribe of Native Americans. Russian, Spanish, and French explorers and traders later came to the area, and a river port was established there in 1909. There isn鈥檛 clear evidence on how the city got its name. Some claim it was named after state senator A.B. Florence who represented Lane County between 1858 and 1860. Another claim supports the theory that says the city was named after a French vessel that was wrecked at the mouth of the Siuslaw River in 1875.聽聽聽

Tourist Attractions In Florence

The ancient landscape of Florence is what attracts visitors. The Oregon city provides a rich history, geography, and archeology with its Pacific Ocean sandy beaches and many places to visit.

Visitors usually go to the Oregon Coast Military Museum. The 3000 square feet museum has a vast collection of war items from local veterans who donated to the museum. The nonprofit organization in the museum honors American Military Veterans, both in the past and present, and provides education and artifacts to serve the community and Veteran organizations throughout the Oregon coastline.

The Siuslaw River that runs through the city has the famous Siuslaw River Bridge, built in 1936. The bridge spans the water next to the heart of the city鈥檚 downtown.

Visitors also go to the Darlingtonia State Natural Site, which was made specifically to protect just one species of plant called Darlingtonia California. It is a carnivorous plant and can only be found in the park. Visitors enjoy the biking trails there, along with the boardwalks through the amazing flora. Being near the ocean, visitors go to the coast also to watch the frequent whale migrations.聽
