Oxford is the home of the University of Mississippi. It's a lively college town, and its downtown district has a consistently vibrant atmosphere. The residents call it "The Square" due to the numerous boutique shops, bookstores, and award-winning dining surrounding a central historic courthouse. Those interested in the arts will enjoy exploring Square Books, one of the nation's best independent bookstores, or taking a leisurely walk through Southside Gallery, which features regional, national, and international art.

Rowan Oak, the former residence of the esteemed writer William Faulkner, is located just south of the square. The community has a definite artistic and creative ambiance, including The Walter Anderson Museum of Art, The Pink Rooster Gallery, and The Art House, which display local talent. Canton

Canton is known for its small-town charm, with a downtown district that feels like stepping back in time. The Canton Courthouse anchors the Square, with beautifully preserved buildings, antique shops, and local eateries on every side. Visitors will love browsing through the excellent antique stores, including the Emporium of Canton and Canton Square Antiques.

The Canton Flea Market draws thousands of artisans, crafters, and pickers every May and October. The Biedenharn Coca-Cola Museum, located in an 1890 building where Coca-Cola was first bottled, offers a sweet glimpse into the town鈥檚 contribution to the iconic beverage鈥檚 history.

While the numerous casinos along the waterfront offer many gaming options, several downtown restaurants draw the locals, including Ten South Bar and Grill and Key City Brewery and Eatery, with excellent pizza, wings, and craft beers served in an easy-going industrial ambiance. Although it is not downtown, visitors should not miss the Vicksburg National Military Park with its Civil War monuments and memorials.

Columbus

Columbus has a wonderful Civil War history as a hospital town, converting local churches and homes to treat wounded soldiers from both sides. Many of the wounded from the Battle of Shiloh are buried in the local Friendship cemetery. As a result of the humanitarian work of the townsfolk, many of the antebellum homes are still present, giving the community a quaint Southern charm. The downtown area features a mix of historic homes, unique shops, and dining options.

Tupelo enjoys its status as Elvis Presley's birthplace, with a nice, presentable downtown district that is easy to explore. The Elvis Presley Birthplace and Museum allows fans to visit the modest two-room house where the King of Rock 'n' Roll was born.
