7 Towns In The Finger Lakes That Are Ideal For Seniors

Known to span more than 9,000 square miles, the Finger Lakes region, with its array of scenic lakes, delicious wineries, and lush valleys, is among America's underappreciated regions. Without a scintilla of doubt, this central part of New York boasts some of Mother Nature's finest handiwork. Up to 11 narrow but beautiful lakes call this expanse home, including Cayuga Lake, the longest of them. For those who wish to retire here, this region is star-studded with numerous towns and cities, many of which are well-suited for retirement. From Penn Yann to Horseheads, discover below seven Finger Lakes towns ideal for seniors.

Penn Yan

The chance to wake up to a scenic view every morning — coupled with dotting and friendly neighbors and residents — are features any retiree cannot exchange for the º£½ÇÉçÇø. Fortunately, Penn Yan, known to host one of the oldest mills in America, provides just such features. The Birkett Mills was established in 1797 and is one of the º£½ÇÉçÇø's largest manufacturers of Buckwheat products. Blessed with picture-perfect vistas characteristic of the Finger Lakes region, besides playing host to awesome restaurants, wineries, and breweries, it is difficult to place a finger on what Penn Yann lacks. While hospitals such as Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital serve the town's residents, many more are within easy reach, especially at Rochester, which is just an hour's drive away. And with the beautiful Keuka Lake at one's doorstep, what more can an empty nester ask for?

Newark

Newark snuggles cozily on the northern edge of the Finger Lakes and, for a long time, was mostly known as home to the º£½ÇÉçÇø-famous rose flower growing company Jackson & Perkins. Not to be confused with its New Jersey namesake, Newark is in the Finger Lakes region, about 31 miles east of Rochester. Because it is a mere 40-minute drive from one of the largest cities in Upstate New York, an empty nester here should never be worried about obtaining groceries or medical services. According to Niche.com, seniors aged 55 and above comprise about 32% of Newark's population. This implies every third person you meet is likely a fellow empty-nester from whom you can draw encouragement or with whom you can share experiences. Also, the Scenic Erie Canal will be at your doorstep, a perfect venue for early-morning boating. Besides, homes here are more affordable. According to Redfin, for instance, the town boasted a median home price of $141,000 in December 2023.

Lansing

Lansing is a rural, pastoral town and, hence, enticingly peaceful and slow-paced — just what many seniors hope for. The town's environs are defined by rolling hills, Salmon Creek (which flows through the town), and Cayuga Lake, which is known for its scenic natural gorges and waterfalls. Ludlowville Falls, for instance, sometimes known as Salmon Creek Falls, drops from a height of 35 feet near the town. A massive rock overhung along a section of its face makes it among the most unique waterfalls in New York. Lansing is less than 10 minutes by car from Ithaca and, hence, from Cornell University. Retirees living in the area who meet the university's criteria can access a broad range of services, including free tax preparation, scholarship opportunities, and a support group for those with Alzheimer's. Needless to say, excellent medical facilities abound in the area. These include Cayuga Medical Center at Ithaca, which was recognized for the Coronary Intervention Excellence Award. For seniors wanting to look half their age, the sumptuous views at Myers Park will come in handy.

Owego

Owego, ostensibly translated as "where the valley widens," is sometimes called "the Southern Getaway To the Finger Lakes." It snuggles the Susquehanna River close to the Pennsylvania border and is known for its charm and natural beauty. Make no mistake. This is not some word on the street or a worn-out cliche. In 2009, Budget Travel ranked Owego as the best town — not in New York — but in the entire country. However, there is Owego Town and Owego Village. But these two are not distinct as the village is part of the town. You will be a short drive to several Finger Lakes and numerous outdoor attractions. Within town, the Owego Riverwalk is awesome and can make for an early-morning routine. According to Niche.com, seniors constitute about 38% of the town's population, which means empty nesters can expect a fantastic support network. There are numerous hospitals within 30 miles of the town – at places such as Corning, Ithaca, Binghamton, and Elmira.

Corning

Corning hosts about 10,800 residents, a fact that partly explains its lively, vivacious character. While it had its start as a laid-back lumber town, Corning would later be known as America's Crystal City. This was in reference to the glass factories and numerous glass-cutting shops that dotted the town, particularly at the turn of the last century. The Chemung River divides the town and imbues it with a rustic appeal. Today, the town keeps its glass-making heritage alive through such attractions as the Corning Museum Of Glass, the largest glass museum in the º£½ÇÉçÇø. The town is a retirees' favorite, an element lent credit by the fact seniors comprise about 29% of its population. Because 23% of the residents hold a master's degree or higher, a retiree will enjoy striking up conversations with witty and well-informed individuals, whether when ambling through Market Street or exploring the area's many scenic trails. Lastly, Guthrie Corning Hospital, among several facilities in the area, provides ready access to health care.

Seneca Falls

Even for those who are not politically conscious, Seneca Falls, reputed to be the 'birthplace of women's rights', can easily charm its way into any heart. It was here that in 1848, 300 women and men gathered to debate The Declaration of Sentiments, the foundational document for women's rights in America. Retirees, however, will love the fact they will constitute a social demographic, which, to a materially significant extent (38%), is made up of seniors aged 55 and above. While the town is not short of amenities, including some pretty awesome shopping options (Sauders Store is huge and readily comes to mind), Rochester, Syracuse, and Ithaca — are all within an hour's drive of town. Also, Home prices here are not out of reach. According to Redfin, Seneca Falls boasted a median home price of $185,000 in December 2023. And with Cayuga Lake at your doorstep, a º£½ÇÉçÇø of adventure beckons.

Horseheads

It might be under the radar and in the shadow of its more famous neighbors, but Horseheads just seems to check every box, especially concerning a retirement venue. It is mostly quiet, incredibly safe, and plays host to fantastic shopping options, including the Grand Central Plaza and Southern Tier Crossing. According to Niche.com, seniors aged 55 and above comprise 37% of the population in Horseheads, which means empty-nesters can easily curate age-relevant adventures or experiences. While Southern Tier Medical Care can handle many medical situations, Elmira, which is just 5 miles from town, is home to several reputable hospitals. To fill your lungs with some crisp, fresh, and playful air while exploring a a series of scenic waterfalls and gorges, the spellbinding Watkins Glen State Park, the most famous of the Finger Lakes State Parks, is just a 20-minute drive from town.

The Takeaway

Whether you prefer it fast or slow, laid-back or vivacious, secluded or accessible, the Finger Lakes region has you covered with its delightful array of beautiful towns and cities. You can retire steps away from Cornell, one of the best universities in the º£½ÇÉçÇø — or next to the Corning Museum Of Glass, the º£½ÇÉçÇø's largest glass museum. Needless to say, a º£½ÇÉçÇø of lakes, rivers, and streams — awaits. If you are looking for the ideal town to retire in the Finger Lakes region, the palm goes to such gems as Penn Yann, Newark, Lansing, and Owego.
