7 Most Comfortable Towns In The Southern United States For Seniors

Since the days of saloons and gunfights, the Southern United States has become exponentially more comfortable and certainly more survivable. Yet, the region's rich history still remains in tranquil towns scattered between Texas and the southern east coast, and picking a spot to visit or settle down in is as simple as asking yourself if you prefer scenery, a temperate climate, things-to-do, or a mix of all three. For older adults who wish to leave the monotony of modernity behind, these next few options are worthy of serious consideration.

Fredericksburg, Texas

Fredericksburg is west of Austin, but aesthetically, it often feels like it sits at the center of Europe. For older generations that prefer traditional symbolism and stone masonry over modernist monotones, this is a perfect town to stay in touch with one’s roots. Or, look more recently into WWII at the National Museum of the Pacific War to be reminded of your peers and ancestors who risked it all. Yet, while Fredericksburg is ancient and somber in design, its activities will keep you young. Performances at the Fredericksburg Theater Company, spas and gardens at the Fredericksburg Herb Farm, and hiking at the Enchanted Rock State Natural Area are the tip of the iceberg when it comes to planning peaceful or adventurous weeks here. Customization is, as everyone knows, the most important ingredient in comfort.

Beaufort, North Carolina

No sensation is cozier than being rocked to sleep on a yacht just off the coast of America’s most temperate state. Beaufort is all about boating, so even if you do not have one of your own, invest a little time into any of the local senior communities, and chances are, you will make a friend who does. A statistic in your favor of this potential for like-minded networking is that 51% of Beaufort’s population is over the age of 50; that means the majority of meetups are going to come with a maturity that can be hard to find in regions with a younger population. As for the town itself, shops and restaurants are aplenty on Front Street, such as the old-timey Green Room cocktail bar and Beaudega, with its overflowing supply of local goods and spirits. More could be said regarding the town’s flavorful history and regular festivals, but some treasures are best discovered in person.

Abingdon, Virginia

The veil between the countryside and the warmth of community is particularly blurred in Abingdon, which could be described as idyllic-to-a-fault. It sits right on Route 81, which empowers residents to receive visitors or visit elsewhere, despite how successful the town is at captivating your attention. Its delightful tricks include the 1933 Barter Theatre, a lovely 34-mile rail-to-trail path, a cultural center, a museum of art, and even historic sites like the Abingdon Muster Grounds. A glance down Abingdon’s neatly arranged main street along US-11 reveals taverns, beautifully kept lawns, and wide brick sidewalks that encourage exploration for the sake of leisure. If you look hard enough, you actually might just see yourself there in the near future.

Ocean Springs, Mississippi

Fifteen square miles of all-American respite is the name of the game in Ocean Springs. Not only is the town packed with the patriotic personality and cultural layout that gives the South its iconic shine, but Ocean Springs also delivers on day-to-day quality of life. This can be seen in its parks, focus on arts over casinos, and its gentle elevation that keeps intact the knees of all ages. Another aspect that gives Ocean Springs a unique ambiance is its coastal attitude, which separates it from inland Mississippi, as well as the number of Asian influences throughout the town, thanks to a large Vietnamese community. Now, if your family is visiting you, I encourage a trip to Fort Maurepas Park, which has a sprawling walking trail and a high-quality playground. Otherwise, I am sure that on most days, you can be found at one of Ocean Springs’ legendary sandy beaches.

Blowing Rock, North Carolina

Out here in the Blue Ridge foothills, folklore and scenery reign supreme. Blowing Rock's namesake comes from a fantastical jut of stone stretching out over endless forest valleys, and tourists love to take photos of themselves dangling over an imaginary abyss that is essentially a whimsical illusion. Back in town, various clubs, historical societies, art festivals, and churches are the glue that keeps neighbors invested in one another's well-being. A lot of folks are avid fans of the "Tweetsie Railroad" amusement park, themed after its collection of decorated steam engines, but there are also activities like Ferris wheels and zip lines to enjoy. Adventurous options like these will either keep you young-at-heart or keep the young in your family coming back to visit you for more, should you reside in Blowing Rock.

St. Augustine, Florida

Few US towns are blessed with Spanish influence in the way that St. Augustine is. It is one of the oldest settlements, founded in 1565, and there is reason aplenty for why folks choose to continue residing or visiting in the region. One such draw is its legendary fort, the Castillo de San Marco, which awes guests with cannons and preserves the living conditions of the soldiers stationed here long ago. Other incentives, particularly for older generations, include the capable medical facilities at Flagler Hospital or St. Johns County Council on Aging, which offers classes and volunteer opportunities for programs like Meals on Wheels. Besides that, features like the St. Augustine Amphitheatre and the St. Augustine Aquarium are certain to keep you engaged with events and community.

Hendersonville, North Carolina

The climate is comfortable, the scenery is beautiful, and the streets are famously walkable— Hendersonville is a perfect marriage of tradition and modernity. One buzzword stands out, in particular: these folks love their apples and have the annual festivals to prove it. Unrelated but similarly named is the iconic Apple Valley Model Railroad Museum, which has a dazzling collection of miniatures and amusing model trains that will 'wow' the curious and enthusiasts alike. Right next door to it, literally, are options for soul food, a taco shop, a bakery, and even pizza. All across the town are delightful neighborhoods with activities like that, including trails, museums, and the Flat Rock State Theater, which makes Hendersonville ideal for those who prefer to stay comfortably occupied.

Final Thoughts

A benefit to living in a town with welcoming networks for seniors and plenty of activities is that engagement keeps your mind and body healthy. When you are healthy, you are comfortable. Keep in mind that, besides the cozy weather in many of these spots, a healthy list of things-to-do is a massive draw for convincing family and friends to stop by and spend a little time together. So, for the sake of family, health, and self-fulfillment, give the Southern United States a chance.
