Ithaca sits at the south end of Cayuga Lake and is one of the best small towns to visit in the finger lakes. It is surrounded by opportunities for outdoor recreation including the nearby Allen Treman State Marine Park, Buttermilk Falls State Park and the larger Taughannock Falls State Park and Robert H. Treman state park. The region is known for its many gorges and waterfalls. Hike one of the many hiking trails to take in the surrounding natural beauty, kayak the clear waters of the nearby lake, or book a boat tour rom Lansing Harbour.

Ithaca is also a vibrant college town, and is home to Cornell University, Ithaca College, and Tompkins-Cortland Community College. Take in the scenes and beautiful architecture, or relax on East Hill. The colleges also bring a lively nightlife to Ithaca Commons, while Collegetown offers great dining options.

Other attractions in town include the Greater Ithaca Art Trail, Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University, the Museum of the Earth, the State Theater of Ithaca, and The History Center in Tompkins County.

Seneca Falls

Seneca Falls sits at the Northern end of Cayuga Lake, about 40 miles from Ithaca. Known as the ‘Birthplace of Women’s Rights’ it has an interesting history, being the location of the first Women’s Rights Convention held here in 1848. Stroll the Seneca Falls Historic District and take in buildings from the 19th century, or stop by the National Women’s Hall of Fame and the Women’s Rights National Historic Park, which commemorates the occasion. Other notable stops for history lovers include the Seneca Falls Historical Society and Museum, and the ‘It’s A Wonderful Life Museum.’ Located in the former Seneca Theater, this museum celebrates the famed Frank Capa film, and the various locations which were filmed in the movie.

Seneca Falls, and many of the finger lakes towns are known for their wine. In fact, Seneca Falls marks the northernmost stop on the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail, which connects a number of award winning lakefront wineries. Enjoy wine tasting at local Montezuma Winery and follow the path all the way to Ithaca.

Geneva

Just a short drive west of Seneca Falls is a town called Geneva. It is part of Ontario County at the north end of Seneca Lake. The town is a great roadtrip option as it is only an hour from both Rochester and Syracuse. Geneva is full of small town charm. Its rich land means it has an abundant food and drink scene, with local farmers markets, farm-to-table restaurants, breweries, and wineries. Walk downtown’s Linden Street to choose from a wide variety of eateries and cafes.

Geneva also has a romantic feel about it, in large part due to the presence of Belhurst Castle. This historic landmark sits on Seneca Lake and is not just a scenic building, but is home to Isabella Spa, Belhurst Winery and Edgar’s Restaurant. For the more adventurous type Cashing Conservation Area has miles of trails, including cross-country ski and snowshoe trails in winter.

Watkins Glen

Like Geneva, Watkins Glen is also on Seneca Lake. This scenic village is surrounded by natural beauty and wildlife. One of the area’s biggest attractions is Watkins Glen State Park. The park is full of cascading waterfalls and flowing waters. Its main trail known as Gorge Trail measures only 2 miles, but includes 19 different waterfalls, 800 stone steps. Other places for outdoor recreation include the nearby Finger Lakes National Park, and Sugarhill State Park.

Beyond the parks, Watkins Glen is also famous for its thrilling racing history at the Watkins Glen International speedway. At the northern tip of Keuka lake is the town of Penn Yan. Take in the picturesque views of the lake, or enjoy boating and fishing in warmer months.
