The Rockefeller family purchased the land and donated to the United Nations.
Design
The United Nations headquarters in New York City has an international architectural style. The design was drawn up by the United Nations Board of Design which was an international committee of architects. The board members adopted a plan by Oscar Niemeyer, plan 23W, and construction started on September 14, 1948. The architectural firm of Harrison & Abramovitz built the headquarters of the United Nations, completing the building on October 9, 1952. Since then, the site has been the official headquarters of the United Nations.
