The flag of Venezuela takes after the colors of the former Gran Colombia. Seven of the eight stars represent the original provinces of Venezuela who banded together at the time of independence. An eighth star was added to represent Sim贸n Bol铆var, the political leader who was a major force in the establishment of many states' independence from Spain.
