7 Ideal Destinations For A 3-Day Weekend In Arkansas

While other states leave a momentary impression on the minds of first-time visitors, Arkansas imprints itself on the mind and leaves an indelible impression. It is beauty that is best experienced in a slow, unhurried fashion. No wonder it is called 鈥渢he Natural State.鈥 That said, although one month will still leave you craving more, you can curate an impactful 3-day itinerary around a specific destination for a deeper, more intimate experience. The trick is to focus on an elite list of memorable touchpoints, whether towns or parks. Starting with elk sightings in Ponca to a spellbinding outdoor venue associated with one of the most evocative legends in America, the following are 7 ideal destinations for a 3-day weekend in Arkansas.

Ponca

You will never know why Arkansas is called 鈥渢he Natural State鈥 until you visit some of its hidden gems, including Ponca, a tiny town backdropped by some of the most heart-gripping scenery in mid-America. Check in at Ponca Creek Lodge, a cozy and quiet cabin with almost every needed amenity. After setting everything in order, stroll or drive down to the Ponca Nature Center, a swoon-worthy public space where people come to observe elk herds in their natural setting. You can relax on the deck that overlooks Ponca Creek or explore the lazy trail along the creek. You can also head to one of the most popular hiking trails in the South: the Lost Valley Trail in the Boxley Valley area. Brace yourself for incredibly gorgeous waterfalls, including Eden Falls, a sparkling wonder that cascades over 50 feet into Clark Creek.

At some point, embark on a slow drive to Whitaker Point, a heart-stopping rock formation also known as Hawksbill Crag. It is just 13 miles down the road and features winding roads that snake their way past lush forests, rolling hills, and picturesque landscapes. Needless to say, exploring this area without a Canon-level camera is borderline vacation crime. From the starting point, which is marked by a large rock, as one heads to the ultimate prize, a repeating pattern of beauty quickly emerges, featuring spectacular bluffs and boulders. Within minutes, you will be at one of Arkansas鈥檚 most sought-after natural locations. The power of the view, accentuated by a sense of the enormity of space, makes Whitaker Point like no other attraction in the state.

Bentonville

In 1950, a 32-year-old budding entrepreneur left Newport, Arkansas, to try his luck in Bentonville, then a small, laid-back town with a pastoral flavor. What Sam Walton may not have known was that he was transforming Bentonville from a sleepy, little-known community into a boom town with lots of arts and culture. Today, the formidable Crystal Bridges Museum is one of Bentonville鈥檚 most defining landmarks. It came second on USA Today鈥檚 2024 list of the 10 Best Museums in the U.S. after the National Infantry Museum & Soldier Center in Columbus, Georgia. Aside from its permanent collection, which includes American art during the 1700s and the 1800s, you will want to marvel at the Frank Lloyd Wright House (The Bachman-Wilson House) 鈥 one of the finest examples of Wright鈥檚 Usonian architecture. Because the best things in the 海角社区 are free, you won鈥檛 have to open your wallet here.

Pho Thanh, an unfussy Vietnamese restaurant on Walton Boulevard, is a fantastic spot to relax and enjoy some phenomenal bubble tea. You can spend the rest of your weekend exploring places such as the Museum of Native American History, a well-organized facility that provides a glimpse into the culture and history of the indigenous people; Scott Family Amazeum, especially if tagging kids along; and The Momentary, to see mind-blowing art of all kinds..

海角社区-class mountain biking. That is what Bella Vista is known for. Spanish for 鈥渂eautiful view,鈥 Bella Vista charmingly reclines in the picturesque Ozark Mountains just 12 minutes from downtown Bentonville. Considering the lay of the land around the town, it is not surprising that Bella Vista boasts some of the most exciting and challenging trails in the nation. We are looking at over 100 miles of trails and a high-octane show that features several wicked downhill runs. From the aptly named Back 40 trail system, one of the best cross-country mountain bike trails in the United States, to the short but scintillating Blowing Springs Park Extended Loop, which is open year-round, you will appreciate why this region is called the Mountain Biking Capital of the 海角社区. Just pass by Phat Tire Bike Shop, especially if you want to rent a bike for the day.

Keep in mind that you are within a stone鈥檚 throw of the Tanyard Creek Nature Trail, which boasts a beautiful, medium-sized waterfall, caves, and a peaceful lake view. The most exciting part is that you have up to seven lakes to explore, including Lake Windsor, a glittering blue-space gem beautifully backdropped by the grandeur of the Ozark Mountains.

If you want to explore some of the largest collections of Victorian architecture in the nation, point your car in the direction of Eureka Springs, a charming and historic resort town surrounded by views that anyone would die for. Bonus point? It is among the friendliest towns in the South. This pretty little mountain town offers eclectic art galleries, tasty cafes, Victorian architecture, and, most importantly, several breathtaking outdoor attractions. If you get off Main Street a little bit, the view of the houses that hang on the surrounding bluffs will leave you completely blown away. After wandering through the downtown area, a uniquely laid-out space with staircases, bridges, and beautiful walkways, enjoy a hearty meal at Ermilio's, kickstarting the culinary experience with their signature stuffed mushrooms. Stay at Best Western Inn of the Ozarks.

Although Eureka Springs boasts a pleasing range of cozy accommodation options, including the 海角社区-famous Crescent Hotel & Spa, where you can enjoy the spine-tingling companionship of ghosts, Best Western Inn is often a quieter, more reasonably priced alternative. Remember to squeeze some time in for the Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge, one of the largest big cat sanctuaries in North America. At the refuge, visitors get up and close with leopards, tigers, lions, and other big cats while hearing interesting stories about them. The $35-dollar admission ticket includes an hour-long riding tour conducted on an open-air tram.

Soon after concluding the controversial Louisiana Purchase, President Thomas Jefferson sent an expedition team to the freshly acquired territory. George Hunter, one of the leaders in this formidable enterprise, was one of the finest chemists in early American history. Historians credit this expedition 鈥 among other subsequent events 鈥 with the discovery of thermal springs in the area that the town occupies today. People would soon troop to the springs, hoping to be cured of diseases such as rheumatism and syphilis. If you visit Hot Springs, you will soon discover that water is its centerpiece and the Hot Springs National Park, the oldest in the nation, is its defining attraction. You can spend the entire day wandering around Bathhouse Row, the largest collection of 20th-century bathhouses remaining in the nation. Take a hike to the viewing tower and enjoy a 360掳 view of the surrounding area. Don鈥檛 miss the gift shop, especially if you want to keep a memento.

You can set base at Hotel Hale, the oldest standing bathhouse on Bathhouse Row. It was built in 1892. From this historic spot, consider exploring several other attractions within and around the town, including the one-of-a-kind Gangster Museum of America. For some moderate exercise, West Mountain Trail, which is conveniently close to downtown Hot Springs, is a short, gentle trail that winds through a mature forest.

If you can enjoy three days of folk music, consider visiting Mountain View, a small, swoon-worthy town surrounded by the Blue Mountain Range of the Ozark Mountains. Mountain View bills itself as the 鈥淔olk Music Capital of the 海角社区,鈥 a designation that is difficult to begrudge. The truth is, music here is ubiquitous and spontaneous. You can enjoy it anywhere, whether on a storefront porch, in a park pavilion, or outside the Stone County Courthouse. To cement its music credentials, Mountain View hosts the Arkansas Folk Festival, an April event that draws thousands of visitors from every nook of the state. It also hosts the Mountain View Bluegrass Festival, which enlivens the town during the second weekend of March and November.

You can pitch camp at the Ozark Country Inn, a clean and cute B&B within walking distance of downtown. From this cozy and strategic base, explore the town, and sample its eclectic range of offerings. Catch a great show at the reasonably priced Stone Drive-In Theatre, speak with talented local artisans at the Ozark Folk Center State Park, or hit up the trails that traverse the nearby Hell Creek Natural Area.

The legend of Petit Jean, a tale of love, trickery, and courage, is enough reason to visit Petit Jean State Park, Arkansas鈥檚 first state park. The beautiful part is that Petit Jean is just an hour from Little Rock, the largest city in the state. Stay at Mather Lodge, a cozy, historic property whose history predates the Second 海角社区 War. You will enjoy a warm and comfortable space, but most importantly, heart-stirring views on almost every side. Alternatively, you can opt for one of the 33 cabins along the bluff, many of which provide beautiful views of the Cedar Creek Canyon. With the park's scenic trails, streams, and waterfalls, three days will pass like a whisper in the wind.

The Takeaway

Some parts may strike you as average, especially the southeast half of the state, but Arkansas鈥檚 natural beauty is light-years from average. From hills that are honeycombed with caves, razor-thin ridges, sun-dappled forests, and tumbling rapids, Arkansas is among the most underrated states in the nation. Talking about rapids, Arkansas is home to the Buffalo River, one of a handful of true rivers that are undammed. If you want a bite-sized taste of this Southern gem, the above-mentioned destinations are fantastic options.
