Lake Chelan, Washington
The beauty of Lake Chelan is unsurpassed. Perhaps the most well-known freshwater lake in Washington state of the US, this 50.5-mile-long lake is fed by glaciers. The lake's stunning blue water and unending summer sunshine make it a particularly sought-after vacation spot.
Waterskiing and wakeboarding are the main attractions as boats of various sizes and shapes traverse the lake. One thing will stand out to you as you go through the hills that surround Chelan and Manson: grapes. With approximately 40 wineries offering wine tastings, vineyard tours, and year-round activities, the valley is one of the county's fastest-growing wine districts.
Geography of Lake Chelan
In Lake Chelan, there are two basins. Wapato, the bottom basin, is shallower and makes up about one-fourth of the entire lake's length. The majority of the lake is covered by the upper basin, Lucerne, which is substantially deeper. The narrows, where the lake is just 0.35 miles (0.56 km) wide, is where the sill between the two basins rises to within 122 feet (37 m) of the surface.
Two separate glaciers that collided and then separated to produce the sill are what shaped the two basins. The Stehekin valley was first scraped by the Chelan glacier as it descended from there, maybe all the way to the Columbia River. Later, the Okanogan lobe traveled all the way to Wapato Point in the Chelan Valley. Huge amounts of debris were left in the valley that the Chelan glacier had initially carved out as the Okanogan lobe withdrew.
History of Lake Chelan
From the early Native American occupants to the pioneers who came in the 19th century, all the way up to the wineries and artists that help make modern-day Chelan so distinctive, the history of the Chelan region reads like a miniature history of America.
The initial human settlers in the area are thought to have arrived some 10,000 years ago. (Humans have been in North America for at least 16,000 years; it's probable that they crossed the Bering Land Bridge from Asia.)
It's interesting to note that experts think glacial activity also contributed to the formation of Lake Chelan roughly 10,000 years ago. Is it conceivable that the region's natural wealth and beauty were luring people to its shores even then? These early indigenous people were probably descendants of the Wenatchi Tribe, and it's believed that Alexander Ross, an explorer working for the Pacific Fur Company, gave them the name "Chelan." He stated that the neighboring lake and river were linked and that the locals called the river the "Tsill-ane," or "deep water."
