Flags, Symbols & Currency of Palau

The national flag of Palau is light blue with a large yellow disk shifted slightly to the hoist side; the blue color represents the ocean, the disk represents the moon; Palauans consider the full moon to be the optimum time for human activity; it is also considered a symbol of peace, love, and tranquility.

History of the National Flag of Palau

The national flag of Palau was adopted on January 1, 1981, upon separation from the United Nations Trust Territory. Given its similarity in design to the Japanese national flag, Futaranosuke Nagoshi, a Japanese professor suggested that by adopting this design the island group pays tribute to the Japanese flag. However, the designer of the flag of Palau, John Blau Skebong, denied the allegation claiming that no such connection exists between the two flags.

In spirit let's join hands, united, one

Care for our homeland...from forefathers on

Look after its concord, its glory keep
