Many students in the US attend either public or private universities in these states after high school. Public universities receive support from federal and state government through donations, revenue, tuition fees, and endowment proceeds. However, students still pay for tuition fees depending on the state, university, and the place where the students reside. In terms of the total number of public and private universities in the states, the top four states with the highest number are Texas, California, New York, and Pennsylvania.

Texas is the second-most populous state (after California) with approximately 28,304,596 people. It is also the second-largest state in the US by landmass. It has 45 public universities, more than 69 nonprofit private schools, and 254 profit private institutions. Due to the large number of universities, Texas hosts approximately 1.5 million full-time students in such institutions. California

California is a state with the highest population in the US, hosting 39,536,653 people. It is also a state that is considered as the most economically fertile state. Notably, its public higher education system is the largest in the US. New York

New York is the largest and most densely populated urban area in the US. It comprises of 45 public institutions and 180 private institutions of higher learning. Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania comprises of 45 public universities and 112 nonprofit private universities. These universities host about 45,000 students at the main campuses and approximately 94,000 students on other campuses. Some of the state鈥檚 leading universities and colleges are Penn State College, Swarthmore College, University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Pittsburgh among others.

College Accreditation

In all the states, universities and colleges are officially recognized by different regional and international accreditation agencies that are critical to a university鈥檚 rules, regulations, and public reputation. However, if a university is not authorized, students may not be enrolled at these schools, and the degree certificates they offer might be considered worthless. Besides, such universities may end up being completely shut down. States with the most educated population enroll graduates from other regions and retain students from their college systems. However, the smallest states enroll few students while the largest states enrolled more students.
