The airport鈥檚 history can be traced to 1923 when a School of Naval Aviation was built on Governador Island. After expansion and renovation, the airport had become the country鈥檚 domestic and international air hub by 1970. The airport serves 17,261,873 passengers annually, and it handled 132,792 metric tons of cargo in 2015. It is a hub for Gol Transportes A茅reos.
