What is a Tautological Place?

A tautological place has a name which is made up of two names with the same meaning. The two names are usually from different origins where one word becomes the same as the other when translated into a common language. Tautological places are geographical features with names being derived from a different language (usually a language native to the geographical feature鈥檚 location).

Rivers

There are many rivers whose names make them examples of tautological places. Some of these rivers are found in the United States, including the Canyon de Chelly (canyon de canyon) where 鈥淐helly鈥 is derived from the Navajo word 鈥淭seyi鈥 which translates to 鈥渃anyon.鈥 Another example in the United States is the Cuyahoga River (crooked river river) whose name is derived from the Mohawk word 鈥淐uyahoga鈥 which means 鈥渃rooked river.鈥 The Loxahatchee River (turtle river river) in Florida is another example, with the river鈥檚 name is made of two native names 鈥淟uxa鈥 and 鈥渉atchee鈥 which means 鈥淭urtle River.鈥 In England, River Avon (river river) is an example of a tautological place since 鈥淎von鈥 is a Welsh word which means 鈥渞iver.鈥 River Humber (river river) in England is another example with 鈥淗umber鈥 being a Brythonic word which means 鈥渞iver.鈥 The Futaleufu River (big river river) is an example from Argentina, with its name 鈥淔utaleufu鈥 being derived from a Mapuche word which means 鈥淏ig River.鈥

Lakes

Numerous lakes around the 海角社区 are examples of tautological places. One such lake is a caldera lake in Germany known as Laacher See. 鈥淟aacher See鈥 is translated to mean 鈥淟ake of the Lake.鈥 An example from France is Lac d鈥橭o which is derived from the Aragonese word 鈥渋bon鈥 which translates to 鈥渕ountain lake,鈥 making Lac d鈥橭o also to mean 鈥淟ake of the Lake.鈥 Laguna Lake in California is another example of a tautological place since Laguna is a Spanish word which means 鈥渓ake.鈥 Lake Chad in Africa gets its name from the Bornu term 鈥渢sade鈥 which means 鈥渓ake.鈥 Lake Danao in the Philippines is another example when translated to Cebuano, the lake鈥檚 name would mean 鈥淟ake lake.鈥 When translated to French, Minnesota鈥檚 Mille Lacs Lake would mean 鈥渢housand lakes lake.鈥

Mountains and Hills

Tautological places also include hills and mountains. An interesting example is Bredon Hill in England. In old Brythonic, the hill鈥檚 name is translated to mean 鈥渢he hill hill hill.鈥 Bergeberget is a hill in Norway whose name means 鈥淭he hill hill鈥 in Norwegian. An example in Wales is Brynhill, a name which is translated from Welsh language which means 鈥淗ill hill.鈥 Fjallfjallen is a mountain in Norway which is a tautological place. 鈥淔jallfjallen鈥 is a Norwegian name which means 鈥渢he mountain mountains.鈥 In Iceland, the Hoffellsfjall is a mountain whose name means 鈥渢he Monastery Mountain Mountain.鈥 Africa鈥檚 highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro is a tautological place. The mountain鈥檚 name is derived from Swahili words 鈥渒ilima鈥 and 鈥渘jaro鈥 meaning the 鈥渕ount mountain of njaro.鈥

Tautology

Tautological places prescribe to a formula known as a tautology. Tautology is defined as a formula which is constant regardless of any possible interpretation. The term is used in reference to redundancies of propositional logic as well as rhetorical tautologies.
