Cities With the Largest Indian-American Populations

In 2017, according to the US government, people of Indian descent made up roughly 1.3% of the country's population at approximately 4,402,362. The group is considered one of the fastest growing minorities in the US with a population growth rate of nearly 70% from 2000 to 2010. Indian Americans began moving into the US during the mid-19th century with the Sikhs being the first group to move into the country and most of them moved to the country's western coast. In the 21st century, several US cities have large Asian populations such as New York, Chicago, and San Jose.

New York

The New York metropolitan area has a higher population of Indians than other urban areas in the country. There are a total of 526,133 people of Indian descent living in New York City. Indians in New York made up the second largest Asian group after Chinese-Americans. In 2014, the borough of Queens had a population of 144,896 Indians which was the highest population of Indians in any New York borough. Other boroughs with significant Indian populations were Brooklyn and Manhattan. One of the main reasons why New York has a high population of Indians is because the city is a popular destination for first-time Indian migrants to the US. One of the most prominent Indians who lived in New York was Bhicaji Balsara who was amongst the first Indians to become a citizen of the US.

Chicago

The Chicago metropolitan area has roughly 171,901 Indian-Americans which was the second highest Indian population of any metropolitan area in the US. For much of the 20th century, most of the Indians who moved to Chicago were professionals, and most of them initially lived in Uptown in Chicago. In later years a significant number of Indian migrants moved to the wealthier suburb. Some of the areas in Chicago with significant Indian populations include Glenview and Naperville.

Washington, D.C.聽

Washington, D.C. has the third largest number of Indian-Americans in the country, at 127,963. There are also large populations of Indian-Americans living int he surrounding states of Virginia and Maryland.聽

The Impact Of Indians In The US

Indians in the US have had a massive influence on the country's culture in several fields such as religion, entertainment, and cuisine. Indian films have gained popularity in the US mainly due to the influence of Indian Americans.
