The Globe and Mail is the most popular newspaper in Canada with an average daily circulation of 323,133 copies from Monday to Saturday. The newspaper does not publish a Sunday edition. The Globe and Mail is owned by a Toronto-based company, The Woodbridge Company, with its headquarters located in 352 King Street East in Toronto, Ontario. Originally known as The Globe which was founded in 1844 by George Brown, the publishing company merged in 1936 with another company, The Mail and Empire (founded in 1895) to form The Globe and Mail. The company has seen other mergers and acquisitions through the years with the 1965 merger with FP Publications and subsequent acquisition by The Thomson Corporation, the 2001 merger with Bell Canada to form Bell Globemedia. In October 2010, the Globe and Mail did several redesigns on its paper layout to create a fully-colored-page newspaper with better graphics. The move had the effect of spiking sales of the publication. The Globe and Mail have separate editions printed in the cities of Halifax, Winnipeg, Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, and Calgary.
2. Toronto Star
The Toronto Star is Canada鈥檚 most popular newspaper based on weekly publications and second in daily publications behind The Globe and Mail (The Globe and Mail do not produce the Sunday edition.) The Toronto Star has a daily circulation of 308,881 newspapers. The newspaper is owned by Torstar Corporation鈥檚 subsidiary, the Star Media Group. The Toronto Star was first published in 1892 and was then known as the Evening Star and was created by striking employees of the Toronto News, led by Horatio Clarence Hocken. The paper originally did poorly and was acquired by different individuals over the years. Joseph Atkinson was the paper鈥檚 editor from 1889 to 1948 when he died; he had a profound influence in the popularity the paper. The newspaper released its iOS app in September 2015 and in January 2016 announced that it would be outsourcing all its printing operations after closing down all its printing plant.
3. Le Journal de Montreal
The Le Journal de Montreal was established in 1964 by Pierre Peladeau and is owned by Montreal-based Quebecor Media Company. With a daily circulation of 231,069, the Le Journal de Montreal is the most popular French-language newspaper in North America. The newspaper also has the highest-circulation tabloid newspaper in Canada. The Le Journal de Montreal has seen several alterations over the years from its original issue with a complete overhaul in graphics in September 2005.
