A critical factor for evaluating the quality of life of citizens in any region is the condition of its infrastructure. US News ranked the states in the US according to their infrastructure. The areas of infrastructure evaluated were energy, transport, and internet access. According to US News, the state with the best infrastructure in the United States is Iowa, while the worst is West Virginia.

Iowa is ranked at number one in infrastructure among the states in the United States. Iowa鈥檚 energy is ranked at number 5 in the country. The highest ranked measure in energy is renewable energy usage at number 6, with close to a 30% share of energy consumption from renewable sources. Transportation is ranked lowly at number 37, with the highest measure being commute time at number 7. The average commute time in Iowa is about 20 minutes. Road quality is ranked at number 10, with about 11.3% of roads in poor condition. Internet access in the state is the best in the country, ranked at number one with its measures on broadband access, and ultra-fast internet access both ranked highly at number five and one respectively. About 99.9% of households in Iowa have broadband access with download speeds of 25mbps or faster and 69.6% households having ultra-fast internet access with speeds of at least 1gbps.

North Dakota

The state of North Dakota is ranked at position two in infrastructure. Energy in North Dakota is ranked at position six, with power grid reliability being at position three in the country. The state experiences about 70 minutes of power outages per year. Renewable energy use is ranked at number 11, with the share of energy consumption from renewable sources being 18.2%. Transport is ranked at number 13 with road quality being ranked number two. Only 3.7% of roads in North Dakota are in poor condition. Commuting time is ranked at position three with the average commuting time in the state being below 20 minutes. Internet access is ranked at position two with ultra-fast internet access ranked at position two. About 67.7% of households in North Dakota have ultra-fast internet access of at least 1gbps.

Oregon鈥檚 infrastructure is ranked at position three in the United States. Energy is ranked at position one in the country with renewable energy usage being at position one. The share of energy consumption from renewable sources is 45.4%. Transport in Oregon is ranked at position four, with the highest measure being road quality at position four indicating that about 10% of roads are in poor condition. Bridge quality is ranked at number 10, with slightly above 5% of bridges in the state deemed deficient. Internet access in the state is ranked at number 17. Ultra-fast internet access is at number 15 with 16.3% of households having ultra-fast internet access of at least 1gbps.
