Albuquerque is the city with the highest population in New Mexico state, the US and the seat of Bernalillo County. The city boasts of unique night-time cityscape with numerous building exterior illuminated in vibrant colors. Albuquerque has expanded greatly with several skyscrapers dotting the city鈥檚 skyline. Although the city has some of the tallest buildings in New Mexico, none of its skyscrapers are among the tallest in the US at over 700 feet. The highest-rising building in Albuquerque is 351 feet. The proposed Symphony Tower, when completed, will be the tallest building in New Mexico at 440 feet. Here are some of the tallest buildings in Albuquerque.

Four Tallest Buildings

Albuquerque Plaza Office Tower

Albuquerque Plaza Office Tower, also known as the US Eagle Plaza, is a skyscraper in Albuquerque at 351 feet. It is the taller of the two buildings that contain the class-A office space. Albuquerque Plaza Office Tower has 22 floors and a floor area of approximately 357,000 square feet. The tower's design is credited to HOK Architects and the planned development consisted of an office and hotel towers. The two towers were to be connected at the base. The construction work started in 1988 and the tower was officially opened in 1990. Albuquerque Plaza Office Tower is considered one of the most sustainable buildings in the US, utilizing hybrid thermal energy storage system.

Hyatt Regency Albuquerque

The Hyatt Regency Albuquerque is the tallest hotel-only building and the second-tallest building in New Mexico. It rises to a height of 256 feet and has 20 floors. It forms part of the Albuquerque complex plaza which includes the Albuquerque Plaza office tower. The Albuquerque complex plaza is a subsidiary of US West and was also designed by HOK Architects. Hyatt Regency Albuquerque is roughly square in plan and contains 395 hotel rooms. The first two floors contain the retail promenade and conference room. Its construction began in 1988 with the demolition of Mountain Bell building and was completed in 1990.

Compass Bank Building

Compass Bank Building was formerly called the National Building. The high-rise office building is situated in Downtown Albuquerque. It was the tallest building in New Mexico from 1966 when it was completed until the completion of Albuquerque in 1990. Compass Bank Building is 238 feet tall and has 18 stories with the lowest six floor being parking garages. If the antennas at the top of the building are included it reaches a height of 272 feet. The skyscraper's design is credited to Burk Jr. Its construction started in 1965 and was completed one year later.

500 Marquette

500 Marquette is a 235-foot, 15-story building in Downtown Albuquerque. The design of the building was done by Dwayne Lewis Architects. The construction work was completed in 1986. The first four stories are glass atrium while the 11-story block is trapezoidal. 500 Marquette also has a multi-level parking garage that extends along the 6th Street.

Summary of the Albuquerque's Tallest Buildings

Only 19 buildings are at least 150 feet tall. Two of the 19 buildings, Pete V. Domenici United States Courthouse (176 feet) and Metropolitan Courthouse (175 feet), have less than 10 stories. The tallest residential building in New Mexico is Park Plaza Condominiums at 160 feet while the tallest hospital building is Lovelace Medical Center at 166 feet. The tallest building completed in the 2000s is the Metropolitan Courthouse at 175 feet.
