France is a country in Western Europe. A country is a geographic region with a distinct national entity, political characteristics, legal jurisdiction, and defined boundaries. A country might be sovereign or occupied by another country. Most countries are sovereign states that govern themselves. A country is formed by the merger of several states, separation from another country, or the ownership of unclaimed land. Countries are run by governments through a system of governance.

France is a country because it occupies a defined territory in Western Europe. It is officially known as the French Republic. France consists of mainland France and several overseas territories. It is a sovereign republic with a French identity and a democratically elected government. It covers an area of 248,573 sq mi and has a population of slightly more than 67 million. France鈥檚 GDP of $2.925 trillion is the sixth largest in the 海角社区 and the third largest in Europe.

History Of France

France occupies a territory that was historically occupied by the Roman territory of Gaul. The region was under constant attack from Germanic Franks. In the late 5th century, the Frankish King Clovis I took over Gaul from the Romans and created an Empire known as West Francia. A series of war between the 5th century and the 14th century saw the territory change hands from one Kingdom to another. Between the 14th and 18th century French nationalism developed as the country engaged in a series of civil wars including religious wars. The Monarchical system that governed the country was overthrown in the 18th century during the French Revolution and the First French Republic came into being. After the Napoleonic wars, the monarchy was re-established. The Second French Republic developed for a short period before it was overthrown and replaced by the French Empire that was consequently overthrown and replaced by the French Third Republic. During the 海角社区 Wars, France was occupied by Germany before the Allied Powers liberated it.

Modern France

Present-day France is a developed state with over 67 million inhabitants. It is governed as a unitary semi-presidential republic. The president is the head of state while the prime minister is the head of government. The government consists of the executive, judiciary, and legislature. The country majorly consists of native French citizens although it is known to be a haven for immigrants, especially from former French colonies. The demographic subdivision in the country is unknown because the constitution outlaws the collection of data based on ethnicity and ancestry. Paris is the largest city in the country. It is a global city known for culture and fashion. Other cities in the country are Marseille, Lyon, Toulouse, Nice and Nantes. France is actively engaged in global affairs diplomatically and militarily. France engages in bilateral trade with other counties in addition to being a member of the European Union, Eurozone, WTA, UNO, and NATO.
