Who Invented Basketball?

Basketball was invented in 1891 by James Naismith, a Canadian-American physical education instructor, physician, and sports coach at the Young Men鈥檚 Christian Association (YMCA) Training School (now known as Springfield College) in Springfield, a city in the US state of Massachusetts. In December 1891, Naismith attempted to develop an engaging activity that would keep his students occupied and fit throughout the long New England winter. After reviewing various ideas, and rejecting some as unsuitable for the walled gymnasium, Naismith wrote basic rules for the new game and nailed a peach basket to an elevated track ten feet about the floor. Unlike modern basketball nets, the peach basket had a bottom and the ball had to be retrieved manually. The bottom of the basket was later removed, as retrieving the ball after every score was time-consuming. The game was also first played using a soccer ball.
