At least six flags have green as the dominant color. The Saudi Arabian flag is all green with a white Arabic inscription and a sword. The green color on the flag represents Islamic religion while the white sword represents the strictness in the application of justice. The flag of Dominica is also green with a centered cross of three bands of white, black, and yellow, and a red disc at the center bearing a parrot encircled by ten green stars. The flag of Brazil has a green field with a yellow diamond at the center bearing a blue disk that depicts a starry sky. The disk is spanned by a white curved band bearing the country’s national motto. The flag of Mauritania has a green field with a crescent and star and flanked by red strips at the top and bottom. The flag of Zambia has a green field with an orange eagle flying over a set of red, black, and orange vertical stripes. The flag of Pakistan has a green field featuring a white star and crescent with a vertical white stripe on the hoist side of the flag.
Flags with Green Horizontal Band
Almost half the flags with green have at least one green horizontal band. The green horizontal band is either at the top or at the bottom or both. Some of the flags with green on the top include Gabon, Kuwait, Ethiopia, Sierra Leon, the United Arabs Emirates, Iran, and Equatorial Guinea. Flags with green horizontal bans at the bottom include Madagascar, Gambia, Kenya, Libya, Malawi, Belarus, Uzbekistan, Ghana, Bolivia, Jordan, Mauritius, Hungary, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Lesotho. Some of the countries with the green band both on top and at the bottom include Sao Tome and Principe, Suriname, and Zimbabwe.
Flags with Green Vertical Bands
A green vertical band is also common in most flags, especially flags with at least two dominant colors. The vertical band is often on either the hoist or fly side of the flag. Some of the flags with green vertical bands include Algeria, Benin, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Ireland, Nigeria, Mexico, Portugal, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka.
Significance of Green
The significance and meaning of green on most national flags differ from one country to another. However, most countries associate green with their beautiful natural landscape or abundant natural resources. Other countries associate it with the agricultural productivity of the country or the fertility of their soil and national prosperity. Green on the flag of Saudi Arabia symbolizes the country’s major religion which is Islam.
